Avril Lavigne was definitely a trail blazer back in the day. Just like P!nk and Gwen Stefani, the Canadian-bred rock princess created her own lane and set herself apart from her other pop-rock counterparts.
In 2002, Avril burst on the scene with her now classic gem, “Complicated,” from her debut album Let Go.
The song won Avril her first two Grammy nominations for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song was such a success, that it reached the top-ten in more than ten countries including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US.
The song spurred one of the most iconic quotes of the decade, that is still recognizable today.
“Why’d you have to go and make things so complicated? I see the way you’re acting like somebody gets me frustrated.”
What’s more? The song was such a world-wide hit, that fans everywhere were rocking white tees and ties, mimicking Avril’s iconic look from the video. In 2009, Rolling Stone Magazine readers voted “Complicated” as the eighth Top single of the decade, while Blender magazine ranked the song #197 in their “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born” list.
So grab your white tee and mini black tie and rock your way down memory lane with “Complicated”:
