Meet Tigger da Author, the newest face signed to UK rapper Sway’s label Dcypha Productions. Featuring alongside Sway and Kano on one of 2013’s biggest urban tracks so far, “Still Sway & Kane,” it’s no wonder this South London singer is being tipped for big things. The IMC caught up with Tigger after the video shoot for his upcoming single “P.O.W.E.R.” and found out how missing one day off his job at a call centre changed his entire life.
IMC: For those who haven’t heard of you before, tell us a bit about yourself?
Tigger: I am 23 year old musician from South London. I sing, I write and I produce a lot of my own stuff. I have also recently been signed to Dcypha which is Sway’s record label.
IMC: What is your musical background? Is there any person who really inspires you?
Tigger: I like to call my style eclectic soul. To me, this means it’s not the ‘soul’ that you are expecting to hear. I have my own twist and I am putting it into a lot of new school stuff. As for inspirations, I am inspired all the time. I could be sitting here after this conversation and go write a track about something we have talked about. I have a lot of interesting conversations with my grandmother. I’ll go into the studio and record something straight from the heart. I want to keep it real.
IMC: When were you signed?
Tigger: I officially signed to Dcypha about a month ago, but we have been talking for a couple months. It all happened after I did the track with them.
IMC: It’s fair to say you have shot into the limelight after featuring on “Still Sway & Kane,” how did that come about?
Tigger: Well it’s quite a funny story…I used to work in a call centre, it was so boring! One day my friend rang me and said he was supposed to be having a writing session for Little Mix, he asked if I wanted to come down. So I called in sick at work and went down to the studio. When I got there I saw Sway come in and we started having a random conversation. He asked if I did my own music, and I was like yeh! I played him a couple songs and he really liked my vibe. Sway played me the beat for “Still Sway & Kane” and asked if I could do a hook on it. I did it there and then and that was that. A couple of weeks later I got a phone call saying they wanted to do a video too.
I never thought it was a really cool thing to sing to my boys so I kept that part of my music under wraps. But now I’m on a track with Sway and Kano they’re like, “Yeh Tigs you need to sing!”
IMC: So was music always something you wanted to get into?
TIgger: It was never really a decision, just a natural progression. I have always been into rapping and singing. I never thought it was a really cool thing to sing to my boys so I kept that part of my music under wraps. But now I’m on a track with Sway and Kano they’re like, “Yeh Tigs you need to sing!” I find it funny.
IMC: The official video which has just been released features a catalogue of UK stars including Wretch 32 and Chip, what was it like working alongside them?
Tigger: The experience was amazing because each Wretch, Chip, Kano and Sway are all very credible artists in their own right. Not only was it a great introduction to them as people but also what it’s like shooting a serious video.
IMC: What was the best part about working with Sway and Kano on the single?
Tigger: To see the standards that they work at, they are both fully established artists. And obviously the fact its Sway and Kano…I’ve been listening to them since I was young and to be on a track together is crazy!
Sway is probably one of the best guys to give advice because he’s been through it all and has over 10 years experience in the industry.
IMC: As a mentor has Sway given you any good advice?
Tigger: Always! He told me to stay humble and keep your head down. Never think that you have done enough. Sway is probably one of the best guys to give advice because he’s been through it all and has over 10 years experience in the industry.
IMC: What artists would you like to work with in the future?
Tigger: James Blunt, because he’s amazing!
IMC: Who is your favourite artist and what is your favourite song ever?
Tigger: I say a different one every time but I think it would be Michael Jackson-“Smooth Criminal,” because it reminds me of myself [laughs]. And definitely Lauryn Hill.
IMC: You have just come straight from a video shoot, what was it for?
Tigger: The video was for a song called “P.O.W.E.R.,” it’s the first song I’m releasing from my EP.
IMC: What else can we expect from Tigger da Author in 2013?
Tigger: I am currently touring with the Dcypha team on the Example tour as a support act which is incredible. I am also releasing my 4 track EP Evilution in early April so look out for that. The inspiration for the name came from the obvious fact that the world is evolving, but it’s not always in the right way. I think the EP itself reflects that too.
