Each year, performing rights organization, SESAC honors their songwriters and publishers who have had significant airplay achievement in the Rock, Pop, and Urban formats across the country. This years invitation-only event was held in New York City on May 14th and the IMC team covered the red carpet interviewing guests of the awards show.
Pop songstress Michelle Williams made a special appearance to present Rico Love with the night’s biggest honor, Songwriter of the Year and we asked her if she had any advice to give IMC fans in regards to becoming successful in the music industry. “Stay focused, be consistent, don’t let a ‘no’ or a ‘you’re not good enough’ completely take you down. Just stay focused,” Michelle said.
Later on songwriter/composer, Rico Love appeared on the red carpet talking of his excitement in being nominated for Songwriter of the Year for Trey Songz’s “Heart Attack.” Love told IMC that it was his first time writing a song for Songz and he was thrilled it became so successful, “It’s a blessing and I know it’ll work out the way it’s supposed to work out,” Rico stated. Later that night Rico Love ended up winning the SESAC Songwriter of the Year award.
One of the evening’s many highlights was the “Visionary Award” presentation to Daniel Glass, renowned CEO and Founder of Glassnote Records. Ben Lovett of Mumford & Sons presented the award to Glass, delivering a comical and heartfelt speech. Glass was recognized for his constant dedication to songwriters and countless contributions to the music industry and for greatly affecting the lives and careers of songwriters. As a connoisseur of the music industry, Glass is known for his knack in recognizing and cultivating talent before anyone else. He’s worked with numerous artists including Billy Idol, Wilson Phillips, Mumford & Sons, Flight Facilities, Reel Big Fish and many more.
Melanie Fiona was in attendance to honor her new song “4am” written by Rico Love, which was also nominated for song of the year. IMC spoke with Fiona minutes before the ceremony. Check out the video of our interview below.
International music sensation Psy was awarded SESAC’s first ever Video Performance Award in recognition of his blockbuster “Gangnam Style” video, which saw over 1.5 billion YouTube views. Psy accepted his award via video thanking his fans for the video’s unprecedented success.
The SESAC pop awards were treated with special performances by two of SESAC’s newest signings, Andy Allo and PJ Morton.
The 17th annual 2013 awards celebration drew more than 400 songwriters, publishers and industry professionals. The star-studded guests included Michelle Williams; hip-hop artist and producer Swizz Beatz; Grammy Award winner, Melanie Fiona; award winning songwriter, Angela Hunte; 112’s, Q Parker and more. There were more than 40 songwriter and publisher award recipients in the categories of Pop, R&B/Hip-Hop, and Rock.
